Statistical & Methodological Training

A central goal of ESIN is to prepare and train the next generation of investigators who are committed to the rigorous study of social, educational, and health disparities among minority populations.  As part of its training efforts, ESIN sponsors an intensive, four-week summer program of its own, called the Empirical Summer Program in Applied Multi-Ethnic Research (ESPAMR).

The central focus of ESPAMR is to sharpen participants’ statistical and methodological skills while also broadening their knowledge of the theoretical and critical perspectives that may be applied to their disparities research.  Training consists of:

  • Advanced statistical courses
  • Practical, hands-on research workshops focused on statistical methods or statistical software
  • Methodological courses focused on quantitative research related to race and ethnicity
  • A series of career development talks centered on such topics as how to apply for federal grants, the ins and outs of journals submission, tenure and promotion, and journal review processes.

This summer program offers the unique opportunity for junior investigators to further develop a core foundation of key research skills and collaborative peer relationships that will ultimately serve as the basis for their retention and success in the academy.
